Common Types of Commercial Trailers

Commercial trailers come in an array of different shapes and sizes. The following are some common types of commercial trailers:

1.     Full Trailer

The full trailer is used to carry large and bulky loads from one location to another. It has an enclosed cabin, typically made with plywood for hauling heavy loads such as steel beams, lumber, or furniture boards. The hitch points are mounted on the trailer’s top and can be either 16- or 12-inch with a capacity of 2000 pounds.

2.     Lowboy Trailer

The Lowboy trailer is similar to other trailers, but it has a lower center of gravity and greater stability. This trailer is one that many people are interested in purchasing. According to experts at Hales trailer, “If you are looking for a trailer to carry different types of cargo such as excavators, bulldozers, and oversized items, then opt for a lowboy for rent that will best suit you.”

3.     Semi-Trailer

This trailer is used for hauling small loads and is shorter than a full trailer but longer than a personal or pickup hauler. The hitch height can range from 12 inches to 16 inches, with a capacity between 2500 and 4000 pounds. The smaller semi typically has an enclosed cabin for storing items, though the larger semi-trailers can be open for storage.

4.     Pickup Trailer

The pickup trailer is a step up from a full trailer and can haul too heavy freight to be transported on a full trailer. The bed and cab are fully enclosed, so there really isn’t much room in them, which means they can only be used to transport finished wood products such as lumber or wood paneling. Many pickup trailers have a cab built right into the trailer instead of separate housing, making it easier to transport shorter loads and reduce the cargo height.

5.     Personal Trailer

This type of trailer is used by individuals and small businesses such as farmers or landscapers who need conveyances that are easier to transport than pickup trucks or cars but don’t have enough space in their yard for a full-size trailer. These trailers typically have two axles, two rear wheels and weigh less than 20,000 pounds. A hitch on the back end of the trailer connects to a fifth-wheel hitch attached to a towed vehicle or a tractor.

6.     Military Trailer

This trailer is designed for military use and specifically for carrying cargo. Military trailers are typically designed for ease of travel in rough conditions, whether through harsh terrain or areas with limited access roads. These trailers have durable construction and adequate protection from rain, snow, dust, and other elements. Trailer construction includes heavy-duty suspension, a single rear axle, and steel or aluminum construction. They frequently have to be used in harsher climates. The significant advantage of military trailers is they can be used in areas with poor access roads, so no extra equipment is required to pull them.

Businesses do have several towing options. Therefore, if you want to make your load transportation efficient and convenient, then you should hire the right commercial trailer.
